It seems, sometimes, that the Philippines has been occupied by every world power. This Saturday, they’ll be occupied by another foreign culture — K-Pop!

Organized by flippish.com’s creator in conjunction with the heads of all of Philippines’ K-Pop group fan clubs, the event is the first ever K-Pop convention in the country. Planned to happen this year because 2009 is the “Philippines-Republic of Korea Friendship Year” (a.k.a. the 60th anniversary of happy diplomatic relations), organizers had hoped to bring over K-Pop stars in conjunction with the embassy.

But even if that didn’t work out, they still got an awesome line-up. Five-hours of continuous entertainment includes a Kosplay contest, a dance contest, a singing contest, and even K-Pop-related stand-up “Komedy.” Every fan-club is spearheading their own booth, selling group merchandising, and networking with everyone who loves the same stuff they do.

The event’s site explains, “For the longest time now, Kpop fans have been scattered all over the Philippines, with only the internet as a place of convergence. For the longest time, Filipino Kpop fans have been staying within the fringes of the global kpop fanbase.” Watch a video with fippish.com contributors explaining what they love about K-Pop, and why they brought it over.
